You can get different answers depending on whom you ask, but Chinese works as the most difficult language for all but about but about a billion people or so. Even the Chinese don't all speak Chinese! There is Mandarin, Cantonese, and at least five other dialects. A Mandarin speaker may not understand Cantonese at all.
